The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday appointed Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa as its interim chairman.
Ghafoor was elected at a vote held during the party’s National Assembly meeting on Monday night, where 65 members voted in favour of his appointment.
The position became vacant after former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail resigned as party chairman. The National Assembly had earlier met on 29 November to select an interim chairperson, but that meeting ended without a decision due to disagreement over the vote.
Three candidates were considered for the post: former Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam, Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, and former Didhdhoo MP Abdulla Waheed.
