The Local Government Authority (LGA) on Monday suspended the president of the Hoarafushi Council, Mohamed Waheed, for three months without pay.
The LGA said the decision followed an inquiry conducted after a complaint was filed with the council. Local Government Minister Adam Shareef granted approval to carry out the investigation in June. The remaining councillors have been given seven days to respond.
According to the LGA, the action was taken as the council president holds primary responsibility for operating the council in accordance with the law and regulations. The inquiry concluded that Waheed had violated laws and regulations. The authority said the temporary suspension without pay was based on the seriousness of the issues, while the decision to advise the remaining councillors was due to the extent of the findings.
The LGA also decided to act on the inquiry report’s recommendations. The matter will be forwarded to relevant state agencies for further action concerning the Secretary General and other administrative staff found to be negligent.
The investigation covered eight cases, including a complaint from a private individual alleging that the Hoarafushi Council had allocated 5,000 acres of land to The Hawks Pvt Ltd. Other cases reviewed included:
-
Expenditure for the Thila Uthuru Women’s Volleyball Tournament this year
-
Adding vacant land adjacent to plots in violation of the Physical Development Plan
-
Purchasing curd trees for the island’s port area in 2023 in violation of financial rules

-
A complaint regarding procurement employees serving on the bid committee
-

-

The LGA said further steps will follow based on the report’s recommendations.
