Government has released a criteria for selecting islands to construct office buildings under a project president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last month.

The Ministry of Cities and Local Government on Wednesday announced the marking method for determining the islands to implement those projects on contractor financing basis and opened for any complaints about the criteria listed.

As per the criteria published in the Ministry's announcement;

  • Island population - 20 marks

  • Council facilities - 20 marks

  • Condition of building - 20 marks

  • Working space for councillors - 10 marks

  • Working space for staff - 10 marks

  • Women's Development Committee Members - 10 marks

  • Kangathi Award - 10 marks

In his address on Decentralization Day, President Muizzu said he would launch a project to build office buildings through contractor financing to solve the problem of space constraints for councils across the country, and to revitalize the worn civic office buildings.

Many councils have no working space, and no attention has been paid to the structural development of the council buildings for the past 13 years, he said.

"Therefore, I intend to make special efforts for the structural development of council offices on the basis of investor finance, with special priority to solve the problem of council buildings. The aim is to create an environment where councils can fulfil their legal obligations, meet and work with the people”.
