High Court judge Mohamed Niyaz has retired from the judiciary with effect from Tuesday.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) accepted his retirement last month. Niyaz had been the longest-serving judge currently on the High Court bench.

In a post on X, High Court media officer Ameen Faisal said, “Justice Niyaz retired from the judiciary after today. Niyaz is an example of honesty and integrity. He has been a sharp and intelligent judge.”

The reason for his retirement has not been stated. Reports indicate that he may have offered to step down due to health concerns. The JSC has confirmed that he has no criminal record.

Niyaz submitted his retirement while an inquiry into his ethical conduct was ongoing at the JSC. He also resigned as the Vice-President of the Commission on 21 August. JSC Vice-President Yazmeed Mohamed has since replaced him.

His retirement comes at a time when the Supreme Court is hearing a case on a constitutional amendment concerning the loss of parliamentary seats through party expulsion. During this period, Niyaz also voted against the dismissal of two judges who were suspended after Yazmeed joined the Commission. Before this, the President was represented by lawyer Mohamed Sameer.
