The protest, now ongoing for more than 24 hours, has been centred in one of the busiest marine traffic zones near Malé. Police said they repeatedly advised the public to avoid blocking other vessels, but protesters did not follow instructions.
Police said the protesters attempted to obstruct passing vessels and tried to enter Malé from the northern side after security forces blocked entry. They also attempted to obstruct boats travelling in and out of the harbour area.
The protest fleet remained anchored between Malé and Dhoonidhoo near Jetty No. 1 throughout Wednesday night.
Police confirmed in the afternoon that Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir was among those arrested. The MDP parliamentary group condemned the arrest and called for his release.
