A six-foot crocodile was captured near K. Guraidhoo on Saturday, authorities said.

The crocodile was caught around 1.5 nautical miles southwest of Guraidhoo by a vessel named Ranmuiy. Following the capture, the animal was taken into the custody of the Maldives National Defence Force.

The MNDF said arrangements are being made to release the crocodile outside the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

Crocodiles are not native to the Maldives, but authorities have said that such animals are occasionally sighted entering Maldivian waters.
