Councils part of executive, not oversight bodies: President
The President said that the presence of opposition members in councils could lead to disagreement within the administrative structure.
President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that local councils should work in coordination with the government rather than function as bodies that hold the administration accountable.
He made the remarks at a gathering held at the People’s National Congress headquarters on Wednesday, in reference to the upcoming local council elections.
The President said that councils are part of the executive branch of the state and that their role is to implement government services at the local level.
He stated that the legal framework separates the functions of the legislature, judiciary and executive, and that accountability of the government lies with the other branches.
“Councils are part of the executive power. They are not meant to be the bodies that hold the executive accountable,” he said.
The President said that the presence of opposition members in councils could lead to disagreement within the administrative structure and affect the delivery of services.
He said that those elected to councils should be individuals who cooperate with the government and support development plans over the next two years.
The President urged voters to consider which candidates would facilitate implementation of government programmes and benefit communities.
He also called on voters to elect candidates from the People’s National Congress, stating that this would support the government’s plans.
The President said that projects are scheduled for implementation in 2025 and 2026 and that many have already commenced.
He added that electing individuals who do not support these efforts could affect the progress of planned projects.
