The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has postponed its primary election to select candidates for the upcoming local council elections to the 16th of next month.

The party’s council primary was initially scheduled for next month. In late August, the MDP opened the primary process to the public.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the MDP said the decision to postpone the primary was taken after the Elections Commission informed the party that the window for submitting nomination forms for the council elections would open in January.

The MDP said polling for the party primary will now take place on Friday, the 16th of next month, from 2:30pm to 8:00pm.

The party has cancelled its previously announced election timeline and said a revised schedule will be released once the Elections Commission publishes its final report.
