Security forces have launched a special operation at Maafushi Prison early Wednesday morning against scams and terrorism activities initiated from within the country's main prison complex.
Police announced the operation in a tweet.
According to the police, MNDF and Corrections are involved in the operation.
The operation was launched following a request from the prison authorities to raid the prison after receiving information that some prisoners were carrying out scams and terrorism-promoting activities by smuggling prohibited items into the prison.
Police, however, refused to disclose any further details.
There have been cases of phones and drugs being smuggled into Maafushi Prison. In March, a man suspected of trying to illegally enter the jail had drowned.
