Thoriq put forward for IRENA representative role
Thoriq resigned as Environment Minister during the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Maldives' representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The nomination was submitted to the People's Majlis in a letter from the President, which was read during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting.
Following the reading of the letter, the nomination was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee for consideration.
Thoriq currently serves as the Maldives' Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
He has held the post of Minister of Environment under both the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the current administration of President Muizzu.
Thoriq resigned as Environment Minister during the recent Cabinet reshuffle. He was subsequently appointed Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates last month, while Ali Shareef was appointed as Environment Minister.
IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation that promotes the adoption and use of renewable energy and supports sustainable development.
The agency is headquartered in Abu Dhabi, where Thoriq is currently based as ambassador.
The Maldives became a member of IRENA in 2009.
