Former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed said on Wednesday that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is prepared to work with former President Abdulla Yameen to address the current situation in the Maldives.

The remarks were made following a meeting between Solih and Nasheed to discuss the MDP’s presidential ticket and other internal matters. After the meeting, the two leaders briefed reporters on the party’s direction.

Solih said he and Nasheed had agreed to expand their roles in holding the government accountable. He said discussions would be widened to include other political figures, including former presidents.

“There are others who can work with us. There are former presidents apart from us. We will continue discussions with them on what needs to be done to hold this government accountable,” Solih said.

Responding to a question from Dhauru on whether the MDP was willing to work with Yameen, Solih said cooperation was possible.

“We can work with Yameen,” he said.

Nasheed added that the party had previously worked with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Solih said there is significant work to be done in the country and that it would be appropriate for Yameen to play a role in those efforts.
