The Housing Ministry has re-gazetted regulations allowing recipients of one-bedroom flats to vacate their units and apply again under social housing schemes.
Under the revised rules gazetted on Sunday, a person who received a one-bedroom flat through a government housing programme and has children under the age of 18 may apply for another housing unit, provided the one-bedroom flat is vacated in accordance with procedures set by the government.
The regulations also allow households occupying two-bedroom flats to apply again under social housing schemes if they have children of both sexes under the age of 18 and agree to vacate the existing unit as determined by the government.
The amendments follow a series of meetings held by President Mohamed Muizzu with residents of densely populated housing areas. During these meetings, residents raised concerns that families living in one-bedroom flats were unable to apply for new housing schemes despite changes in family circumstances.
Some recipients of two-bedroom flats also requested that the rules be amended to allow them to apply for alternative housing schemes after vacating their current units.
