Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim has asked President Mohamed Muizzu to clarify the status of a presidential pledge to abolish the requirement for beneficiaries of the Binveriya housing scheme to vacate land in Malé in order to qualify for land in Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhu.

Under the current rules, individuals who receive land titles or flats are required to vacate any registered land in their name in Malé, even if the plot is 600 square feet or less. During the presidential campaign, President Muizzu said this requirement was unjust and would be changed.

In a letter sent to the President on Sunday, MP Mohamed Ibrahim said the pledge has yet to be implemented. He said city council regulations continue to restrict beneficiaries of housing schemes from transferring, mortgaging or selling land in Malé.

The MP said delays have also occurred in the handover of land under the Binveriya scheme, with completion deadlines having been exceeded. He requested clarification on decisions announced during the presidential campaign.

In his letter, Mohamed Ibrahim asked the President to confirm whether beneficiaries who received land under the Binveriya scheme in Hulhumalé or other reclaimed areas are permitted to transfer or sell land already registered in Malé.

He also asked whether recipients of land under housing schemes are required to vacate Malé, and whether participants in the Gedhoruveriya scheme are allowed to transfer or sell land held in Malé.

In addition, the MP sought confirmation that the requirement to vacate land would be removed for individuals who hold 600 square feet or less of registered land when they are allocated land or flats under government housing schemes.
