Case sent to PG to determine gang under Gang Crimes Act
Speaking at a press conference, police said two individuals have been arrested under the Act.
Police have submitted a case to the Prosecutor General's Office seeking a determination under the Gang Crimes Act, authorities said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, police said two individuals have been arrested under the Act. In addition, two cases have been sent for prosecution, six locations have been searched, 11 people have been arrested, and seven cases have been filed and are under investigation.
Head of Joint Crime Investigation Ishaq Adam told the briefing that the case submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office is intended to determine whether the individuals involved constitute a gang under the law. He said police are acting in line with recommendations provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Ishaq Adam said that since the Gang Crimes Act came into force, the number of such cases has declined.
The Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes Act was passed by Parliament late last year and came into effect in August. The law criminalises the formation and operation of organised criminal groups and sets out penalties for those involved. It also grants authorities powers aimed at preventing gang-related crimes.
While police are authorised to identify suspected gang leaders and members, a group is formally designated as a gang through a court determination.
