President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to work together to eliminate group crimes and unlawful conduct from society.
The President made the remarks during the ratification ceremony of the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes Act, held at the President’s Office. The legislation, which was ratified on Sunday, introduces penalties for crimes including murder, kidnapping, intimidation, and the operation of organised criminal groups.
President Muizzu stated that one of the key concerns in the country is the rise of organised group-related offences, which he said the new law aims to address through long-term measures.
He said the population size of the Maldives makes it possible to bring change through collective effort and public cooperation. According to the President, incidents involving criminal groups and property damage can be prevented if communities work together in support of the law.
The President also noted that criminal behaviour is a part of human nature, but said it can be managed and reduced.
“We are not looking to condemn individuals,” he said. “We want to prevent crimes, so there will be no criminals.”
The law ratified today includes provisions for imprisonment and fines for those found guilty of serious crimes. It also gives the police additional powers, including detention without legal consultation for a limited period in certain cases.
The legislation was passed by Parliament on 15 May 2025 and aims to strengthen the legal framework for dealing with criminal networks operating in the country.
