Civil Court has accepted Nasheed's petition against slanderous allegations made by Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef, saying that Nasheed had attempted an act of terror when he was at the helm of the opposition party during former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's regime.

Nasheed filed a case in the court on 28 November over Shareef's remarks on Twitter, saying it had defamed him and demanded that MVR 10 million be collected from Shareef as compensation.

The case was filed in court by Litigants, a law firm run by Nasheed's brother Nazim Sattar.

During Maumoon's tenure, MDP carried out opposition activities, where Nasheed had led the plantation of an explosive to kill at least 50 people and tried to put its blame on Maumoon's head, Shareef had alleged. He took to Twitter and wrote:

  • MDP’s parliamentary group passed a resolution to stop this and decided to ask for foreign help; Shareef was then the deputy leader of the parliamentary group

  • Nasheed could not do so as foreign leaders objected to his plan

  • Letters sent to foreigners were signed by Shareef as deputy leader of the parliamentary group

Nasheed has denied the allegations.
