Parliament accepts bill to shorten term, align elections
Former President and former Speaker of the parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, said on Sunday that he supports holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same date.
The government has proposed an amendment to the Constitution to align presidential and parliamentary elections and to shorten the term of the current 20th parliament to end on 1 December 2028.
Nasheed stated on X that he supports the proposed amendment and views it as an appropriate approach.
Under the proposed amendment, parliamentary elections would be held at the same time as presidential elections. If approved and enacted, the presidential election scheduled for 2028 and the parliamentary election due in 2029 would take place on the same date.
The current 20th parliament commenced its term on 28 May 2024. Under the existing Constitution, its five-year term would end in May 2029.
The amendment proposes changing the parliamentary term to begin on 1 December and continue for five years. As a result, the term of the current parliament would conclude on 1 December 2028, at which point it would be dissolved.
