Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday rejected claims made in Parliament that no mosques were opened during the administrations of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The response followed remarks by Ibrahim Falah, Parliamentary Group Leader of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), who said during a parliamentary debate that the two MDP governments had not opened any mosques and described the MDP as a secular party.

Nasheed responded in a post on X without naming Falah. He said that prior to 2008, most mosques in the Maldives had been built by private individuals. He stated that, due to deterioration of existing structures and limited capacity, his cabinet decided to initiate a mosque construction programme.

“By the grace of God, we built 42 mosques during the first MDP government,” Nasheed wrote. He served as president from 11 November 2008 to 7 February 2012.

Falah made his remarks while speaking during debate on a bill introduced by the MDP to classify damage to mosques as an act of terrorism. His comments prompted objections from MDP members during the sitting.
