Housing scheme to open applications for those with spouse-owned homes
He said a separate category will be introduced to allow citizens to apply for land even if housing is registered in the name of their spouse.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday announced that applicants will be eligible to apply for housing even if their spouse already owns a residence.
The announcement was made during the President’s address at the opening sitting of People’s Majlis this year. President Muizzu said the decision aims to widen access to land and housing.
He said a separate category will be introduced to allow citizens to apply for land even if housing is registered in the name of their spouse.
The President also said the Binveriya scheme, launched in 2022, will be expanded to include a category for joint landowners. Under this arrangement, each joint owner will receive a separate plot if all owners agree to vacate the jointly held land.
According to the President, 2,000 plots have been allocated for these two categories, with 1,000 plots assigned to each, from the total of 15,000 plots already announced.
He said land reclamation work at Rasmale is ongoing and that the government plans to complete dredging by April this year.
Applications have opened under the government’s Housing for All policy. Under the programme, 15,000 plots will be allocated across the Greater Malé area and Rasmale, while 7,900 flats will be allocated in the Greater Malé area.
The deadline for land applications is 4 March, while applications for flats will close on 17 April.
