President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday said he would take action against any individual involved in corruption, theft or embezzlement if cases are presented with evidence.

The President made the remarks while delivering his presidential address at the opening sitting of People’s Majlis this year. He said the government believes that digitising the public administration system will significantly reduce corruption.

President Muizzu said the administration is undertaking measures to address corruption and is preparing several bills to be submitted during the first session of Parliament this year.

The proposed legislation includes amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act, an Asset Recovery Bill, and amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code. He said these bills will be considered alongside the Unjust Enrichment Bill under the Penal Code and proposed amendments to the Evidence Act, which are currently at the committee stage of Parliament.

According to the President, the combined legislative framework is intended to strengthen mechanisms for investigating and prosecuting corruption-related offences.

“I assure Members of Parliament that if any case involving corruption, theft or embezzlement is brought to my attention with evidence, I will not hesitate to take the necessary action against the individual concerned,” President Muizzu said.
