FDC warns residents over improper waste disposal at Hulhumalé flats
FDC cleared the area last Saturday, but waste was again reported in common areas within a few days.
Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) said on Monday that waste accumulation has reoccurred at its apartment blocks in Hulhumalé Phase 2, days after a clean-up was carried out.
According to residents and FDC officials, waste had been accumulating around the flats for about two weeks, prompting complaints. FDC cleared the area last Saturday, but waste was again reported in common areas within a few days.
Occupancy at the FDC towers in Hulhumalé Phase 2 has increased in recent months, with additional residents moving in during Ramadan. Cardboard boxes and other household items used during relocation have been left in shared spaces, contributing to the build-up of waste.
Hamdan Shakeel said responsibility for disposing of household and bulk waste rests with the property owner. He said improper disposal creates health risks and affects access to residences.
Video and images shared on social media show waste placed near entrances and along walkways. Residents have reported difficulty moving through some areas due to the accumulation.
Hamdan said FDC may take action where waste is disposed of in breach of tenancy agreements, even if the corporation has previously removed the waste. He also acknowledged residents who follow disposal rules and said maintaining shared spaces requires cooperation.
