Residents of the Amaan Dhodhi apartment complexes have raised concerns after rainwater entered common areas and individual flats during heavy rainfall on Saturday night.

The Greater Malé Area experienced prolonged rainfall overnight as the country continued to experience southwest monsoon conditions, locally known as Hulhangu.

Residents shared videos on social media showing water flowing through corridors and into apartments. Some said they spent the night clearing water from their homes.

One resident said the emergency contact number provided to residents was not answered during the incident.

"We couldn't sleep last night because of the amount of water coming in. No one answered the emergency helpline. Every time it rains, we face the same situation," the resident wrote on social media.

Several residents attributed the flooding to openings within the buildings that they said had not been properly sealed. Others said rainwater entered through closed windows during the storm.

One resident also said one of the lifts in Dhodhi Tower 16 had been out of service for around three months.

Residents also raised concerns about other maintenance and safety issues, including:

  • Lifts reportedly becoming inoperative during periods of rain.

  • Questions over the use of the monthly maintenance fee of MVR 1,000, with residents citing recurring flooding and unresolved maintenance issues.

  • Water leaking onto electrical sockets installed beneath windows, which residents said could pose a safety risk.

The southern and central atolls have experienced unsettled weather over the past two to three days.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office), rain is expected to continue across the central and southern atolls on Sunday, although the current spell of unsettled weather is not expected to continue for an extended period.
