MIFCO official Muaz Ali has been dismissed over his alleged role in the theft of more than 13 million cigarettes from two containers at the Hulhumalé MPL port.
Muaz, 48, served as General Manager of MIFCO’s Engineering and Project Department at the time of his arrest in October last year. He was suspended following his arrest. MIFCO has now confirmed that his employment has been terminated.
MIFCO Public Relations Senior Manager Shifza Musthafa said on Wednesday that Muaz was dismissed in November 2025.
“Muaz was dismissed after completing all procedures in accordance with the Employment Act and the company’s employee rules,” Shifza said.
Ten individuals, including Muaz, were charged in connection with the case on 15 December.
Police allege that two businessmen, Mohamed Waheed (Dhigali) and Ahmed Arif (Aatte), were involved in the theft. The three men face the main charges in the case.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has announced that Waheed and Arif have been released from custody.
