Saeed questions MDP focus ahead of council elections

Economic Minister and People’s National Congress (PNC) Vice President Mohamed Saeed on Friday criticised the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for what he described as a lack of focus on the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking at the opening of the PNC’s Maafannu North campaign booth, Saeed said the MDP had not given priority to council-level campaigning and had not held a rally at its campaign booths at this stage of the election period.

Addressing voters, Saeed outlined reasons he said the public should not support the MDP in the local council elections. He claimed that during the MDP’s time in government, funds in the sovereign fund declined from USD 200 million to USD 2 million, and that state reserves were reduced to a level sufficient to cover food imports for only 15 days.

Saeed said the MDP had not presented new policy ideas and questioned the party’s campaign strategy, noting that no booth-level rallies had been held so far.

He further said the MDP was instead engaged in internal discussions over a presidential candidate across several factions, rather than focusing on local council campaigning.

Saeed said that effective local governance required active engagement during council elections and questioned how councils could function if candidates were not supported through organised campaigning.
