The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) will open applications on Monday for its primary ahead of the upcoming local council elections, with the primary scheduled for 27 December.

The council elections are scheduled for March, and the national election itself is set to open for candidacy applications in January.

PNC campaign manager and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falaah told reporters on Sunday that the party’s primary will take place on 27 December. He said applications to contest will be open from Monday until 15 December.

According to Falaah:

  • New members who join the party during this period may also contest the primary

  • Many islands have shown interest in competing for council seats on the PNC ticket

  • Voting will take place at ballot boxes placed on each island; no island ballot boxes will be placed in Malé

  • More than 1,400 people have already expressed interest in contesting

  • Primary applications will be processed through a dedicated online portal

Falaah said the party expects a large primary, noting the level of interest shown across the islands.
