PNC secures 28 council seats uncontested ahead of April polls

While the PNC dominated with 28 seats, the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), secured only one seat without a vote.

The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has secured 28 seats in the upcoming Local Council Elections, scheduled for April 4, as no other candidates contested for these specific positions.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) Sunday released the list of candidates who have been elected uncontested.

According to the data provided by the EC, while the PNC dominated with 28 seats, the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), secured only one seat without a vote. Additionally, the Adhaalath Party (AP) also obtained one seat uncontested.

With these early victories, the PNC has effectively secured majorities in several islands, including Ha. Utheemu, Aa. Himandhoo, ADh. Kunburudhoo, ADh. Dhidhdhoo, V. Felidhoo, Th. Vilufushi, and L. Mundoo. Notably, the PNC won all available seats in L. Mundoo.

  • Mauroof Moosa (Finifenmaage, R. Kinolhas) – Female Member, R. Kinolhas Council

While there are a total of 629 island council seats contested in this election, 33 seats have already been decided without a vote. Consequently, elections will proceed for the remaining 596 seats. Furthermore, 52 city council seats are also up for election in this cycle.
