Fuvahmulah man sentenced to 75 years over drug trafficking funds
The accused, Abdul Basith, 28, of Dhoodigan Gasdhoshuge/Fuvahmulah, was sentenced on Tuesday to 75 years’ imprisonment and fined MVR 300,000.
A man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for possession of funds linked to a drug trafficking network in Fuvahmulah, police said.
Maldives Police Service said the case relates to one of 174 people arrested during an operation carried out in Fuvahmulah six years ago.
The accused, Abdul Basith, 28, of Dhoodigan Gasdhoshuge/Fuvahmulah, was sentenced on Tuesday to 75 years’ imprisonment and fined MVR 300,000. Police did not provide further details of the sentencing.
According to police, more than MVR 3 million and over US$19,000 were transferred into bank accounts held in Abdul Basith’s name. Police said the funds were proceeds from drug trafficking activities.
