The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has expressed support for the proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.

The People’s Majlis recently passed a constitutional amendment to shorten the term of the current 20th parliament to 1 December 2028. The amendment requires approval through a referendum before it can take effect.

President Mohamed Muizzu issued a decree on 16 February calling for a referendum to be held on 4 April alongside local council elections.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been campaigning against the proposal, stating that merging the two elections would affect voters’ rights.

In a statement, the MDA said it supports the government’s decision to hold the elections together.

The party, led by Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, said the proposal would benefit the state and the public.

The statement said the party supports the government’s view that combining the elections could reduce expenditure and support fiscal management.

The MDA also said the measure could contribute to economic management and national development.

The party called on state institutions to cooperate in efforts aimed at reducing public expenditure and strengthening the economy.

According to the statement, the MDA will support policies that it believes serve the interests of the public and contribute to economic stability.
