Five foreign nationals died and two others were injured in a fire at an accommodation block housing migrant workers in ADh. Dhigurah early Friday.

Seven individuals were taken to the Dhigurah Health Centre at 1:57am. Five were pronounced dead on arrival.

The two injured individuals were later transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé for treatment.

According to IGMH, both patients remain on ventilator support as of Monday.

One of the injured men, aged 40, has sustained burns covering 24 percent of his body. The second man, aged 27, has sustained burns covering 17 percent of his body.

Hospital officials said both patients were affected by smoke inhalation and have lung injuries in addition to burns.

Initial findings indicate that the fire may have been caused by a gas leak during cooking. Some occupants were asleep when the fire started.

Information gathered indicates that the accommodation block had a single entrance. The fire began in the kitchen, where the entrance was located, preventing occupants from exiting.

Authorities believe several of the victims died from suffocation.

Police said officers broke down a wall of the building to gain access during the rescue operation.

Seven individuals were found unconscious inside the building, according to police.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
