United States government representative Sergio Gor departed the Maldives on Monday night without meeting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, according to available information.

Gor, who arrived in the Maldives on Sunday, held meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon on Monday.

The President’s Office did not confirm any meeting between Gor and President Muizzu. Gor also did not indicate on social media whether such a meeting took place.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, President Muizzu said a request had been made for a meeting.

Referring to the visit, Gor stated that discussions with the foreign and defence ministers focused on bilateral relations and regional matters.

“This is the 60th anniversary of the relationship between the Maldives and the United States. It is important to identify areas of cooperation and ways to work together,” he said.

Responding to a question from a journalist, President Muizzu said he would not discuss the conflict in the Middle East with the US representative.

“I want to see what they wish to discuss. I have nothing to discuss regarding this war,” he said.

The President also stated that the Maldives will not allow its territory to be used for activities related to the conflict.
