New agreement aims to strengthen cross-border crime probes

The Maldives Police Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of the United States Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, to strengthen cooperation in tackling transnational crime.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony held on Tuesday at Iskandhar Building.
The MOU was signed by Earl Mattia, Regional Attaché for Homeland Security Investigations, and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed on behalf of the Maldives Police Service.
According to the police, the agreement establishes a framework for bilateral consultations and the exchange of information on matters of mutual interest.
The two agencies will also cooperate in the prevention, detection and investigation of transnational criminal activities.
Police said the agreement is intended to support efforts to improve public safety and security while enhancing cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
The MOU also includes provisions aimed at strengthening investigative capabilities through capacity-building initiatives and professional collaboration.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the partnership will support efforts to identify and prevent cross-border criminal activities and address emerging security threats.
Homeland Security Investigations is responsible for investigating a range of international crimes, including human trafficking, cybercrime, financial crime, smuggling and other offences that cross national borders.
Police said the agreement reflects a shared commitment to cooperation on law enforcement matters and the exchange of expertise between the two agencies.
