Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on the government to refrain from further involvement in the judiciary and independent institutions.
Solih made the remarks on Wednesday night during a local council election campaign rally in Addu City.
He said the current administration should maintain the present status of the judiciary and independent institutions without introducing further changes under efforts to enhance independence.
Reform of the judiciary and restructuring of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) were among the pledges of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. After taking office, the President stated that government influence over the judiciary had ended.
However, during a press conference last Monday, President Muizzu said that further measures are required to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and independent institutions. He also announced plans to submit legislative amendments to the People’s Majlis.
Solih said he had accepted the President’s earlier statements on judicial independence. He criticised the recent proposal to amend laws.
“It would be better if the government stopped intervening in these matters. Leave them as they are for now. The people will decide in 2028,” Solih said.
He also alleged that plans to align two elections are linked to political considerations.
The government has maintained that it does not influence the judiciary. Opposition figures have raised concerns, citing delays in court cases and recent changes to the Supreme Court bench, including the removal of judges.
There have also been claims regarding the role of the JSC, with concerns raised about its investigations and composition.
The government has not responded to these claims.
