The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has called on journalists to ensure accuracy in reporting and to avoid presenting information in a way that alters the context of statements.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commission also advised against the use of altered photos, audio or video to incite hatred.

The statement follows calls on social media for action against certain media outlets over reports related to remarks made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a press conference last Monday. The Commission did not refer to any specific outlet or incident.

The Commission stated that all media personnel and broadcasters must adhere to the Code of Practice for Broadcasters and Journalists established under Section 38 of its Act.

“During this period, media outlets are reminded to follow these principles when delivering news and information to the public,” the statement said.

The Commission highlighted provisions of the code that it said should be observed.

Article 5 relates to maintaining national security and safety. Article 6 (k) requires that the context of statements in factual programmes is preserved and not misrepresented. Article 14 (r) prohibits the use of fabricated or altered media content to incite hatred.

The Commission stated that journalists are expected to follow these provisions and carry out their responsibilities with accountability.
