Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has called on the public to avoid actions that may affect religious unity in the Maldives.
The minister made the appeal on Thursday amid discussions on Sunni and Shia ideologies.
In a message to the media, Shaheem urged individuals not to share information about different sects in a manner that misrepresents their teachings or misleads the public.
He stated that the Maldives has followed the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah over time, based on the Quran and the Sunnah.
“The Maldives will remain upon the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. I call on citizens and scholars to uphold this foundation,” he said.
Shaheem also urged the public to avoid actions that could affect unity and to ensure that discussions on sects do not lead to misunderstanding.
He said that only individuals with knowledge in the field should speak on matters related to religious doctrines.
The minister further stated that there is a need to remain aware of efforts that may lead to division within the Muslim community.
His remarks follow recent comments by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who stated that debates on sectarian differences are used to create division and that declaring others as disbelievers is not part of Islam.
