President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government is considering introducing a quota for youth and women in the People’s Majlis.
He made the remarks on Saturday night during a discussion titled ‘Express with President’ held with youth.
The President said a proposal is being considered to allocate 10% of parliamentary seats to youth and 10% to women. He noted that a final decision has not yet been made and will follow consultations.
“With the current Majlis consisting of 93 members, 10% would be around nine seats for youth under the age of 30 and a similar number for women,” he said.
The President said the proposal forms part of broader reforms being considered following the public referendum scheduled for 4 December on aligning presidential and parliamentary elections.
He also stated that the reforms include amendments to address the increase in the number of parliamentary seats.
When asked about the selection process, the President said one option under consideration is to allocate designated constituencies through a lottery system.
He added that these proposals are at an early stage and will be finalised after consultations with youth and other stakeholders.
