Voting is taking place across the Maldives on Saturday in three separate polls covering local governance and a national referendum.
The Elections Commission is conducting Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections, and a public referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held simultaneously.
Polling began at 8:00am and is scheduled to close at 4:00pm, after which ballot boxes will be sealed.
A total of 1,592 candidates are contesting in the Local Council and WDC elections. The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has fielded the highest number of candidates.
According to the Elections Commission, 294,937 eligible voters are registered to participate in the elections and the referendum.
The outcome of the referendum will determine whether future Presidential and Parliamentary elections are conducted at the same time.
