PNC wins 5 seats in cities as MDP secures full majority

Provisional mayoral results show that MDP candidates retained mayoral positions in all five cities.

Provisional results from Saturday’s Local Council Elections indicate that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured the majority of seats across five cities.

Data released by the Elections Commission shows that the People’s National Congress (PNC) has secured five seats across these cities. Two of these seats remain closely contested.

Malé City

In Malé, the PNC secured a lead in the Vilimalé constituency through candidate Ibrahim Samah. All other constituencies were won by MDP candidates.

The elected MDP councillors include Ahmed Ghalib (Hulhumalé South), Mohamed Rilwan Ali (Maafannu West), Aishath Hana (Maafannu Central), Ibrahim Labaan Shareef (Maafannu South), Fathimath Sahula (Henveiru West), Hawwa Shifana (Machangolhi Central), Safaath Ahmed Zahir (Hulhumalé Central), Fathimath Zahiyya (Hulhumalé North), Mickail Mohamed Riyadh (Medhu Henveiru), Aishath Nazima (Henveiru South), Fathimath Laiza (Henveiru North), Aminath Irasha Mohamed (Galolhu North), Ismail Haleem (Galolhu South), Khadheeja Mohamed (Machangolhi North), Farhaan Shafeeu (Machangolhi South), and Hussain Furushan (Maafannu North).

Addu City

In Addu City, the PNC leads in Hithadhoo Mooleke through candidate Ahmed Saeed. The remaining constituencies were secured by MDP candidates.

These include Ismail Saeed (Feydhoo Maadele), Ibrahim Shinaz (Hithadhoo Korovau), Mariyam Saeeda (Hithadhoo Beyrumathi), Mohamed Shuaau (Hithadhoo Medhavau), Hussain Zareer (Hithadhoo Rasgedhera), Dr Aminath Adhala Rasheed (Hithadhoo Maamendhoo), Nusrath Rasheed (Maradhoo), Aqeel Mohamed (Maradhoofeydhoo), and Aishath Zaha Ali (Feydhoo Magudhoo).

Fuvahmulah City

In Fuvahmulah City, the MDP won all seats it contested. The Dadimagu constituency was won by independent candidate Sheeza Ibrahim.

MDP councillors include Hassan Shirhan (Dhiguvaadu), Aishath Ibrahim (Hoadhadu), Fathimath Maasha (Maadhadu), Mohamed Lirar (Miskiymagu), Aishath Inaya (Funadu), Khadheeja Moosa (Malegan), and Mariyam Zaheena Ahmed (Dhoodimagu).

Kulhudhuffushi City

In Kulhudhuffushi, the PNC retained one seat in the North West constituency through Ibrahim Ahmed. The remaining six seats were secured by MDP candidates.

These include Ahmed Abdullah (North), Akbaree Mohamed (North Central), Mohamed Shaiman Adam Saleem (South Central), Rilwan Mohamed (West), and Salma Mohamed (South East).

Thinadhoo City

In Thinadhoo, the PNC secured two seats in the South West and South Central constituencies through Aishath Fazeela Ahmed and Sakauallah Shameem.

MDP candidates won the remaining constituencies, including Nasrullah Ali (North West), Mohamed Vifaq Hassan (North Central), Mazina Hassan (North East), and Ahmed Shiyazu Naeem (South East).

Mayoral Results

Provisional mayoral results show that MDP candidates retained mayoral positions in all five cities.

Ismail Rafeeq received 64 per cent of the vote in Fuvahmulah, Ali Nizar received 65 per cent in Addu, Adam Azim received 45 per cent in Malé, Saud Ali received 51 per cent in Thinadhoo, and Mohamed Athif received 69 per cent in Kulhudhuffushi.

All results remain provisional pending the completion of the count.
