MDP secures WDC leadership across all cities
The MDP also secured the majority of seats within the committees in these cities.
Provisional results from Saturday’s elections indicate that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured the presidency of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) across all five cities in the Maldives.
The cities include Malé, Addu, Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo. In the Local Council Elections held on the same day, the MDP also secured mayoral seats in all five cities.
According to the Elections Commission of Maldives, MDP candidates won the WDC presidencies in each city.
In Malé, Aishath Reesha received 15,162 votes, accounting for 52.22 per cent. In Addu, Fathimath Hijra secured 9,300 votes, or 75.49 per cent. In Fuvahmulah, Mariyam Shiuna received 4,011 votes, representing 56.68 per cent.
In Kulhudhuffushi, Aminath Ibrahim secured 3,124 votes, or 63.63 per cent. In Thinadhoo, Mariyam Sharuna Adil received 2,037 votes, accounting for 49.77 per cent.
The MDP also secured the majority of seats within the committees in these cities.
In Thinadhoo and Addu, MDP candidates won all but one seat in each committee. In Fuvahmulah, the party won all seats except two where no candidates were fielded. In Kulhudhuffushi, all committee seats were secured by MDP candidates.
The results remain provisional pending completion of the count.
