Provisional results from the Fuvahmulah City Council by-election show a tie between two candidates, requiring a second round of voting.

According to figures released by the Elections Commission, both candidates in the Dhandimagu constituency’s women’s seat received an equal number of votes.

The candidates are Aishath Abdul Qaadir of the People's National Congress and independent candidate Sheeza Ibrahim.

The results are as follows:

  • Aishath Abdul Qaadir (PNC): 484 votes (50%)

  • Sheeza Ibrahim (Independent): 484 votes (50%)

  • Invalid votes: 104

  • Total valid votes: 968

Out of 1,306 eligible voters, 1,072 cast their ballots.

Initial counts had indicated a lead for the PNC candidate by two votes. However, the updated figures published after all ballot boxes were accounted for confirmed the tie.

In accordance with electoral procedures, a run-off election will be held.

Speaking to local media, Elections Commission spokesperson Abdurrahman Salah Rasheed said that a second round would proceed if no complaints are received regarding the ballots.

This is the first instance in the current election cycle where a tie has been recorded.

Overall provisional results for Fuvahmulah City show that the Maldivian Democratic Party secured seven out of eight constituencies, including the mayoral seat. The party did not field a candidate for the Dhandimagu constituency.
