Agriculture minister Mariyam Mariya resigns
Her resignation follows the departure of several cabinet ministers earlier in the day.
Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya resigned from her position on Tuesday.
Her resignation follows the departure of several cabinet ministers earlier in the day. Dr Mariya was the second individual appointed to the post under the current administration. She previously served as Minister of Higher Education.
The resignations were submitted at the request of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Those who resigned include Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, and Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya.
Minister at the President’s Office Ali Arif resigned on Monday.
The changes follow developments after the recent local council elections. Several heads of state-owned enterprises have also been dismissed or asked to resign.
Mohamed Rishwan, Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), resigned last week at the request of the government. Farhath Shaheer was dismissed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Abdul Matheen resigned as Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Hussain Didi was dismissed as Managing Director of AgroNet, while Mohamed Najah was dismissed as Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation.
Hussain Fahmy has been appointed as Managing Director of MWSC on Tuesday. He previously served as Managing Director of STELCO and as a Minister at the President’s Office.
