10 ministers resigned to facilitate reforms, President's Office says

The President’s Office on Tuesday announced that ten cabinet ministers have resigned, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu accepting their resignations.

According to the President’s Office, the ministers stepped down to allow the President to implement changes in line with public expectations. The statement said the resignations were submitted voluntarily.

President Muizzu expressed his appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service.

The ministers who resigned are Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, Minister of Youth Ibrahim Waheed, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim.

Minister at the President’s Office Ali Arif resigned on Monday.

The developments follow changes in state-owned enterprises after the recent local council elections.

Mohamed Rishwan, Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), resigned last week at the request of the government. Faruhath Shaheer was dismissed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Abdul Matheen resigned as Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Hussain Didi was dismissed as Managing Director of AgroNet, while Mohamed Najah was dismissed as Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation.

Hussain Fahmy was appointed as Managing Director of MWSC on Tuesday. He previously served as Managing Director of STELCO and as a Minister at the President’s Office.
