Ali Shareef, recently appointed as Minister of Environment, has faced criticism following the circulation of past social media posts.

Posts attributed to Shareef on the platform X began circulating after his appointment. In a post from 2019, he made remarks about Ibrahim Ismail, a former Member of Parliament and former president of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), referring to his physical condition.

In a separate post from 2020, Shareef described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “major terrorist”.

Other posts attributed to Shareef include comments directed at former President Mohamed Nasheed, members of the 19th People’s Majlis, and political parties.

Following the circulation of these posts, some of the content has been removed from his account.

The posts have drawn responses on social media. One user questioned the remarks and referred to statements about individuals and political figures.

Social media commentator Midhuam Saud said ministerial appointments should be subject to review. He stated that past statements should be taken into account when assessing individuals in public office.

Following the circulation of the posts, some individuals have called on Parliament to withhold approval of Shareef’s appointment.
