Youth minister Ibrahim Waheed resigns
With his departure, seven ministers have resigned.
Minister of Youth Ibrahim Waheed (Asward) resigned from his post on Tuesday.
His resignation follows a request by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for several cabinet ministers to step down after the recent elections. With his departure, seven ministers have resigned.
Ibrahim Waheed was appointed to the cabinet on November 17, 2023, the first day of the current administration.
Other ministers who have resigned include Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya, and Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar.
Minister at the President’s Office Ali Arif resigned on Monday.
Following the elections, several heads of state-owned enterprises have been dismissed or asked to resign.
Mohamed Rishwan, Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), resigned last week at the request of the government. Farhath Shaheer was dismissed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Abdul Matheen resigned as Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Hussain Didi was dismissed as Managing Director of AgroNet, while Mohamed Najah was dismissed as Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation.
Hussain Fahmy has been appointed as Managing Director of MWSC on Tuesday. He previously served as Managing Director of STELCO and as a Minister at the President’s Office.
