Former President Mohamed Nasheed has returned to the Maldives following the completion of his term as Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).

Nasheed assumed the role in 2023 and completed his term this year. He returned to the Maldives on Tuesday.

The CVF issued a statement noting his role in the organisation and his involvement as a founding member in 2009. The forum represents countries affected by climate-related challenges and currently has 58 member states. The Maldives joined the CVF in 2009.

During his time abroad, Nasheed had limited involvement in domestic political activities. His return is expected to lead to increased engagement in national politics.

At a recent meeting of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council, Nasheed was appointed as a senior advisor to the party. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was also appointed to the role.

Nasheed has also been named to a committee established to advise the party chairperson on policy matters in coordination with the National Council.
