Second round voting begins for 5 tied seats

The Elections Commission (EC) said voting began at 8:00am and will continue until 4:00pm.

Voting began on Saturday for the second round of elections for five seats in the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, following ties in the initial results.

According to results announced after voting on April 4, candidates received an equal number of votes in five contests, including two council seats and three WDC seats.

In B. Donfanu Council (seat reserved for women), People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate Aishath Muna and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Aminath Rafah each received 113 votes.

In Fuvahmulah Dhadimagu constituency, PNC candidate Aishath Abdul Qaadhir and independent candidate Shiza Ibrahim each received 484 votes.

For the position of WDC President in HA. Kelaa, MDP candidate Mahudhiyya Adam and PNC candidate Hawwa Fazna each received 587 votes.

In HDh. Neykurendhoo WDC member election, PNC candidate Fathimath Riuza and independent candidate Fathimath Nishadha each received 300 votes.

In L. Maavah WDC member election, PNC candidate Fathimath Shafiyya and MDP candidate Mariyam Maisha each received 564 votes.

The Elections Commission (EC) said voting began at 8:00am and will continue until 4:00pm.

Ballot boxes have been placed in the respective islands and in Malé. The EC said 14 ballot boxes have been arranged for the second round.

In the initial elections, the MDP secured a majority of local council seats, including mayoral positions in five cities. The PNC secured a higher number of seats in the Women’s Development Committees.
