President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will publicly identify local councils that fail to cooperate with the administration, while continuing to implement its policies through available legal mechanisms.

Speaking at a gathering in AA. Rasdhoo on Saturday, the President said the government would extend cooperation to all councils, including those controlled by opposition parties. However, he questioned whether such cooperation would be reciprocated.

The remarks follow the outcome of local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections held on April 4, in which the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured mayoral positions in five cities and gained control of several councils.

Referring to recent protests in Malé, the President said some newly elected representatives had taken part in demonstrations. He indicated that the government does not expect cooperation from the Malé City Council, where the MDP holds a majority.

“What we are witnessing on the streets of Malé are elected candidates participating in protests and engaging in conduct that does not reflect the responsibility entrusted to them,” the President said.

He stated that voters expect elected officials to carry out their duties from the time they assume office and to act in line with public expectations. He added that elected representatives should prioritise national interests over party interests.

The President reiterated that the government would continue to work with all institutions regardless of political affiliation. However, he said councils that obstruct government work would be identified publicly.

“I will provide details of how specific councils are creating obstacles. After informing the public, the government will proceed with its work using all legal avenues,” he said.

He added that such updates would be shared during regular Monday press briefings, where councils and their actions would be outlined.

The President said the government’s work would continue regardless of opposition from councils.
