PNC secures 3 seats in second round, MDP and independent win 2
The run-off was required after candidates received equal votes in five contests following elections held earlier this month.
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) secured three of five seats in run-off elections held on Saturday to resolve ties from the recent local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured one seat, while an independent candidate won one seat.
The run-off was required after candidates received equal votes in five contests following elections held earlier this month. These included two council seats and three WDC positions.
Voting took place from 8:00am to 4:00pm, with counting beginning after polls closed.
According to results from the run-off, PNC candidates won the positions of President of HA. Kelaa WDC, where Hawwa Fazna defeated the MDP candidate; member of L. Maavah WDC, where Fathimath Shafiyya defeated the MDP candidate; and member of HDh. Neykurendhoo WDC, where Fathimath Riuza defeated an independent candidate.
In Fuvahmulah Dhandimagu constituency, independent candidate Shiza Ibrahim won the seat reserved for women, defeating the PNC candidate.
The MDP secured the seat reserved for women in B. Donfanu Council, where Aminath Rafah defeated the PNC candidate.
The Elections Commission has not yet released official preliminary results. Both parties have begun issuing statements congratulating their candidates.
