Parliament asked to probe 10-year audit gap at Malé council
The motion calls for Parliament to examine the reasons for the absence of an audit and to take steps to address the issue.
A motion has been submitted to the People’s Majlis seeking clarification on the absence of an audit of the Malé City Council over the past 10 years.
The motion was presented by Member of Parliament for Galolhu North Mohamed Ibrahim, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
It states that the council manages public resources and land but has not been audited during this period. It also raises concerns over the role of the Auditor General’s Office in conducting audits of the council.
The motion calls for Parliament to examine the reasons for the absence of an audit and to take steps to address the issue.
It further proposes that the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee convene to call for an audit and ensure that any reports are made public. The motion also calls for the Auditor General to be summoned before the committee.
The absence of audits has been raised in recent discussions during the local council elections. Some parties have alleged misconduct within the council during the period when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu served as Mayor of Malé.
These claims were raised by candidates including independent candidate Ismail Zariyand and current Mayor Adam Azim, who was elected on an MDP ticket.
Some allegations have suggested that the matter has not been pursued. Mayor Adam Azim has denied these claims. He has stated that two internal audits have been completed and that cases requiring further action have been referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission. He has not provided further details on the findings.
