Twenty-eight people were taken to hospital for treatment after a fire broke out at a house on Lonuziyaaraiy Magu in Malé on Sunday night.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service said they received reports of the fire at the fourth floor of G. Funfalhuge at about 10:49 p.m.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished by around midnight.

Police initially said 18 people were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after suffering from smoke inhalation, while an infant and two other individuals were taken to ADK Hospital.

"The police, along with relevant state institutions, are actively working to provide necessary assistance to the families evacuated from the building as a safety precaution due to this incident," police said.

They added that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) later updated the figures, stating that a total of 25 people received treatment at IGMH and three at ADK Hospital.

According to the NDMA, humanitarian assistance, temporary accommodation and meals have been arranged for residents of the three apartments directly affected by the fire, as well as for those whose homes were left without running water after plumbing systems were damaged.

The authority said emergency assistance and relief support had been provided to more than 58 residents through its evacuation centre.
