Nasheed announces candidacy for MDP chairperson
Fayyaz presented details of the proposed changes, after which Nasheed confirmed his support for Fayyaz to lead the government.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his candidacy for the position of Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and expressed support for former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail as the party’s candidate for Head of Government.
The announcement was made on Sunday during a joint press briefing titled “Bodu Badhalu” (The Great Change), where both figures outlined proposals for changes to the governance structure.
The proposals include separating the roles of Head of State and Head of Government. Under the plan, the Head of Government would be elected through a direct public vote, differing from systems where the position is determined by Members of Parliament.
Fayyaz presented details of the proposed changes, after which Nasheed confirmed his support for Fayyaz to lead the government. Nasheed also stated his intention to serve as Head of State.
“To bring about these changes, I support Fayyaz Ismail to contest as the Head of Government. At the same time, I will seek the party’s endorsement for these reforms and have decided to contest for the position of MDP Chairperson,” Nasheed said.
He stated that the reforms should not be delayed and called on the government to engage in discussions on the proposals.
Nasheed said efforts to advance the initiative would include public engagement and outreach. He also announced plans to visit islands to seek support for the proposals.
Responding to questions, Nasheed reiterated his intention to take on the role of Head of State under the proposed system. He said the changes should be implemented without delay.
